Little over a week has passed since the biblical rainfall in and around Reeth and a second visit by some of the Forage Aid trustees on Wednesday 7th August to attend the North Yorkshire Flood Drop in Session at Leyburn Auction Market showed that whilst the village is starting to clear up and the emergency relief teams move out, our farming colleagues still need and want our support.

The Trustees of Forage Aid would like to thank a Rutland farmer for his very generous donation to the Forage Aid charity. He made a very kind offer to donate straw in the swath during the 2018 drought. Unfortunately, the charity is unable to store bedding or forage due to lack of storage area. As we were unable to accept the offer as it stood our suggestion of bailing and selling the straw was actively taken up and we recently received an extremely generous donation of £1,000 as the proceeds from that sale.

In early November Forage Aid launched its first appeal of the winter for donations of forage and fodder to come forward as we made efforts to support a livestock farm badly affected by the drought earlier in the year. The farm business had real challenges with grass growth over the summer months which put pressure on grazing and ultimately meant the business was unable to make forage for the winter months.

Forage Aid were invited to attend the NFU drought summit last week in London and so our Chairman Andrew Ward attended on behalf of the charity. Defra officials and the other farm Charities were around the table as well as the Country Landowners Association, Tennant Farmers Association, Rural Payments Agency, Natural England, Environment Agency, AHDB, and the Chairs of the various NFU sector boards with the gathering totaling around 50.

The tractor run, raising money for Forage Aid and marking a year since the Somerset levels flooding, that devastated so many farms, will kick off at Sedgemoor livestock market at 10am on Monday 9th February.
